510,866. Cooling brakes. JACKSON, L., MELLERSH-.(Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Co.). Dec. 4, 1937, No. 33614. [Class 103 (i)] Vehicle brakes are cooled by air collected from high pressure areas created at least in part by the forward movement of the vehicle and directed on to the outer surface of the brake drum and into the interior of the drum. In Figs. 1, 4A, a member secured to the brake back plate 15 comprises a scoop 27 arranged to collect air by forward movement of the vehicle and to discharge it through a chamber 28 on to the brake drum 17 and also through a pipe 31 and an aperture in the back plate, into the drum. A trap 32 for collecting and discharging water that may tend to accumulate in the scoop is provided. In Figs. 7, 8, an air collecting chamber 42 has an intake opening 43 extending through the wing of the car and is connected by a pipe 45 to a chamber 44 secured to the back plate 15. The chamber 44 has an opening 47 to direct air over the drum 17 and an opening 48 registering with an opening in the back plate to discharge air into the drum. In another arrangement a funnel-shaped air collecting chamber is disposed in the bonnet behind the engine cooling fan and is connected to an air distributing chamber mounted on the brake back plate.
