Abstract
510,797. Brakes. ZARB. J., LOMBARDINI, P. C., PAHUD, J. E., and GILMOUR, R. Feb. 7, 1938, No. 3844. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A clutch or brake between coaxial shafts 1 and 2 comprises a ring 17 engaging the internal eccentric surface of a drum 23 mounted on the shaft 2, the ring 17 being resiliently connected, by pairs of springs 18, to a floating ring 4 provided with radial slots 7.in which are slidable plungers 5, the inner notched ends of which engage the corners of an axially-movable pyramidal member 3 carried by the shaft 1. Light springs 16, arranged between a shoulder 9 on each plunger and a washer 12 normally held against a shoulder 14 in the slot 7 by a stronger spring 15, maintain the plungers in engagement with the member 3. Each plunger has a further shoulder 11 between the shoulder 9 and the washer 12. If the member 3 is moved fully to the left from the position shown in Fig. 4, allowing the plungers to move inwards, the washers 12 all seat on the shoulders 14, the springs 18 hold the ring 4 concentric with the ring 17, and the plungers reciprocate idly in their slots without any pressure being applied to the ring 17. Thus no torque is transmitted. On moving the member 3 to the right, towards the position shown in Fig. 4, thus moving the plungers outwards, some of the washers 12 are moved away from their seats by the shoulders 11. and the member 4 takes up a position eccentric to the ring 17, causing the latter to be pressed against the drum 23, so that a torque, depending on the displacement of the member 3, can be transmitted. The drum 23, together with the rings 4 and 17, may be movable axially instead of the member 3.
