Abstract
510,293. Cable drums. AUTOMATIC COAL CLEANING CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34573. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1937. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] The drum of a scraper winch is provided with a reserve of cable to minimize loss of time when a breakage occurs. Fig. 1 shows a crosssection of a hollow drum 4 having an interior drum 2 on which a reserve of cable is wound, this cable passing through one of the openings 8, 9 to the outside working surface of the drum 4. When a length of cable breaks off in use, a sufficient length can be withdrawn from the reserve to compensate for the loss. In the construction shown, the drum cheeks are formed integrally with the storage drum 2 and the working drum 4 is formed in halves bearing on shoulders 3 on the cheeks and bolted thereto at 6, it being necessary to remove and replace these halves when drawing off from the reserve. Alternatively, the drum 4 may have a slot parallel to its axis and be rotatable about the shoulders 3 when required. In a modification the storage drum 2 is located outside the drum 4 and co-axially therewith.
