[Class 87 (ii)] Tubular products, such as artificial sausage skins, are produced by extruding swollen fibrous masses, preferably of animal origin, through stationary annular nozzles of such length that partial deswelling of the masses takes place and deflecting the fibres while they are in the nozzles. The nozzle comprises a cylindrical casing 1 in which a hollow core 2 is disposed. The material is supplied through tubes 3 and compressed air is supplied through the space 6 to distend the tubular product. The annular bore may be of uniform cross-section as at 20 or it may be of increasing cross-section as at 22. Helical grooves 21 are provided on the parts 1 or 2 to deflect the fibres and grooves may be provided on both parts with the helices arranged in opposite senses. The grooves need not extend to the outlet of the nozzle. In a modification, Fig. 7, the deflecting elements comprise bores arranged in two groups A, B in a detachable ring 10. The two groups are inclined in opposite senses to produce a crossing of the fibres. The ring 10 may also be of conical form. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the bores may be formed on the inner and outer surfaces of two conical elements 15, 14. As shown in Fig. 12, the deflection of the fibres may be produced by annular grooves 16 and ribs 17 which produce vortex movements in the mass. The nozzles may be 300 to 600 mms. in length and the material may be extruded under a pressure of 80 to 300 atmospheres. Specification 429,040 is referred to.
