Abstract
509,699. Tobacco pipes. RODGERS, F. Jan. 18, 1938, No. 1613. [Class 130] In a tobacco pipe in which the bowl 4 is filled in the upper part of a cupped extension 1 of the stem 2, the smoke is conveyed by a closely fitting tube 18 into an inverted dished member 15 in the extension 1, and thence through openings 17, a space 10, and a bore or slot 9 to the bore 7 of the stem. As shown in Fig. 2, a spring 23 presses the member 15 into a seat in a detachable base 12 of the extension 1, and the bowl is removable through the opening closed by the. base 12. The tube, 18 has a conical head 19 with perforations 20, Fig. 2, or slots 21, Fig. 5, or the head.is split and the parts 22 turned back as in Fig. 7. In a modified construction, Fig. 9, the bowl 4 is retained on the extension 1 by a threaded ring 3. Pads of slag wool may be fitted in the member 15 and absorbent pads or brushes in the stem bore 7. The bowl 4 may be made of briar, meerschaum, clay, china, &c., and its outer surface may be slotted or finned for cooling, plain, knurled or patterned. The extension 1 and base 12 may be of steel, aluminium, alloy, synthetic resin, wood, &c.
