Abstract

509,674. Vices. RYALL, K. F. Nov. 16, 1938, No. 33277. '[Class 61 (ii)] A vice having the fixed and sliding jaw members formed of hollow box section and built up from sheet metal comprises a base B of inverted channel shape, a body or fixed jaw member A made up of winged sides C welded to the base and sloping top E and front part F welded to the sides, and a slide or movable jaw member. D made up of side plates G, front plate g and combined top and rear end plate g<1>, g<2> all welded together. The vice screw H is supported in a bearing h in the front plate g and works in a nut member K projecting up through a hole b<1> in the base plate and formed on a mounting plate k welded to the sides of the channel member B. The jaw blocks a, d may be of box construction formed of sheet metal but are preferably of mild steel section with facings a<1>, d<1> of chrome steel. Instead of the nut K a releasable half-nut may be employed, allowing rapid adjustment. A portion of the top plate g<1> may be embossed or pressed up to provide a small anvil.
