Abstract

509,418. Safety valves. COCKBURNS, Ltd., and GRANT, T. Jan. 14, 1938, No. 1278. [Class 135] A safety valve comprises a valve chest 1 provided with a seating 6 on which a valve lid 2 mounted on a spindle 8 is normally pressed by a spring 13 which is disposed between a cap 14, adjustable by a screwthreaded sleeve 15, and a piston 3, the said piston also being mounted on the spindle 8 and serving, when influenced by discharge fluid pressure, to assist the opening movement of the valve lid. The piston is disposed within a movable liner 4 and is secured to it by one or more pin-andslot or like connections 12, 11 so as to permit the liner to participate in any rotary movement imparted to the piston by the spindle 8, the liner normally seatj,ng on a ledge 10 at the lower end of a part 5 of the valve chest which is bored to accommodate said liner. The valve also includes a tubular nut 19 which may be locked by a pin 24 in the position shown, with the valve lid free to function, or else rotated to engage one of two abutments 20, 21 on the spindle and positively hold the valve lid in its closed or open positions respectively. The valve lid is preferably provided with a radially wide lip 2a overhanging an annular cavity 6a in the valve seat 6.
