[Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] In a process for the treatment of filaments; yarns; foils and similar materials with fluid media under pressure, wherein the material passes through a small orifice in the wall of the pressure chamber, a substantial proportion of the fluid medium which enters the orifice is diverted from the path of the material. The process is particularly applicable to the stretching of materials such as cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose during passage through a substantially closed pressure vessel containing wet steam or hot water at a temperature above 100‹ C. In the arrangement shown, four threads 1 from a creel of bobbins 2 pass through small orifices 3 into a compressedair chamber 4, between nip-rollers 5 and thence into a steam vessel 7 where they become stretched by rollers 9. In passing out from the chamber through orifice 8, the threads pass through holes 22, Figs. 2 and 3, while the pressure fluid escapes mainly through the radial passages 23. Instead of the device shown in Figs. 2 and 3, there may be used simply a plate positioned at a suitable distance from the outlet of the treatment vessel and pierced with a suitable outlet for the passage of the threads. The space between this plate and the treatment vessel may be partially closed so that the steam, after diversion by the plate, is forced to flow in one or more predetermined directions.
