508,970. Making tunnels, shafts, trenches, &c. DORNFELD, R., and HAAGE, K. Jan. 8, 1938, No. 597. [Classes 68 (i) and 85] A machine for forming shafts, tunnels, trenches, or the like in the ground comprises a wedge movable longitudinally relative to a block provided with transversely movable side plates, and means for applying pressure to the wedge and side plates whereby the side plates engage the side walls of the shaft &c. to hold the block while the wedge is thrust forward into the ground. A wedge a is secured to a bottom plate f on which slides, preferably on rollers i, a body b built of longitudinal cylinders g and transverse cylinders h welded together ; pistons e in the cylinders g, are connected through spherical-headed members k to the wedge a and pistons in the cylinders h are similarly connected to plates c adapted to bear against the walls of the trench &c. A pump p supplies pressure fluid which first forces the plates c against the walls and then advances the wedge a. The cylinders may then be connected to the suction pipe of the pump so as first to release the plates c and then advance the body b; springs may be used instead of suction, or further pistons may be provided. Steering is effected by cutting off the supply to some of the cylinders.
