[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Temperature-The vapour pressure 'in an electron-discharge vessel 1 is maintained substantially constant by automatic control of a cooling agent in accordance with temperature and load current. Thus the effect of an element 6, sensitive to wall temperature, upon a switch 8 is modified by a heating coil 11 energized in proportion to load current. The arrangement may be such that the controlled temperature is reduced with increasing loads. The switch may close contacts 9 whereby a saturating winding of a choke 23 is energized, this choke controlling the saturation current in choking coils 13 in the circuit of a fan motor 2 ; the motor circuit may be controlled with or without a relay e.g. by vacuum switches. Upon excessive load, contacts 10 may be closed to energize the opening coil 15 of a circuit breaker 4.; the material of the rod 6 may be so chosen as to determine the relationship between switching-off time and overload. Modifications are described and illustrated in which (a) the rod 6 is in part in the secondary winding of a current transformer connected in the anode circuit, (b) a bimetallic element forming a loop secondary of a.transformer lies upon the switch lever operated by the rod 6 and, carrying the switch contact, modifies by its flexure the operation of the switch, and (c) mercury contact-thermometer and Bourdon-tube type elements on or passing through the vessel wall and having their outer portion heated by a current coil.
