[Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A spring may be pre-loaded so that it tends to contract, by holding the wire during winding at an angle to the coil already wound, and this angle may be varied so that all the turns tend to open up together having regard to the weight of the spring itself when suspended vertically. Alternatively, the diameter of the coils may be varied to produce the same effect. The pre-loading is such that it is just overcome by a weight and the weight of the spring below a specified turn.
