Abstract

508,205. Reflectors. GOWLLAND, E. Dec. 28, 1937, No. 35943. [Class 97 (i)] A reflector of high efficiency which follows accurately the optical form of its support, is made by first forming on the support, which is preferably glass, a thin opaque metallic backing and then forming thereon a thin layer of aluminium. The total thickness of backing and reflecting layer may be less than that of an opaque layer of aluminium. The backing preferably consists of a non-oxidisable metal or metals, such as germanium, chromium or rhodium. The backing and the reflecting surface are formed by electrical evaporation of the metals in vacuo. The reflector is particularly intended for use in optical instruments such as binoculars, in which multiple reflections take place.
