Abstract
507,792. Extracting nickel. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) March 25, 1938, No. 9238. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] Nickel-copper matte, prior to the extraction of the nickel by acids, salt solutions, chlorination, or a carbonyl process, is subjected to a protracted heat treatment in a neutral atmosphere at 400-900‹ C., whereby the solubility and reactivity of the nickel is increased. The matte may be heated for 12 hrs. at 900‹ C., for 24 hrs. at 700‹ C., and so on. Matte in which the ratio Cu : S is equal to or greater than 4 : 1 give the best results, as after the heat treatment all the nickel is in the metallic state.
