Abstract
507,265. Milling-cutters. O.K. TOOL CO., Inc. June 1, 1938, No. 16404. Convention date, Jan. 25. [Class 83 (iii)] A face-and-side milling- cutter of the inserted blade type has blades 15 which are tapered transversely of their length and are secured by wedge action in correspondingly tapered slots in the rim of the body which is conically recessed on its front face so that drifts may be inserted through the inclined holes 24 in the rim to remove the blades without dismounting the cutter from its spindle. The flare of the conical surface 13 is about 15‹ and the bottoms 17 of the blade slots are parallel to this surface. The blades may be cut from tapered bar stock and are ground away at their projecting ends to form face and side cutting-edges 20, 21 respectively. The fixing of the blades is assisted by the provision of serrations 23 running in the same direction as the taper of the blade, the slots being correspondingly serrated. By adjusting the blades' through one pitch of the serrations the face and side edges are advanced in the ratio of about 4 : 1. The drift 25 which passes through the hole 24 engages the back of the blade about midway along its length and the dislodging pressure acts in the direction of the taper so that splitting or cracking of the blade during removal is avoided.
