507,177. Loft - ladders. KNAPMAN, E. G. Dec. 10, 1937, No. 34282. [Class 20 (ii)] A loft-ladder is formed in hinged sections adapted to constitute a rigid ladder when extended and to take a curved path during raising and lowering, the means for raising comprising two spring-controlled cords attached to the foot and head of the ladder, respectively. The ladder 1 comprises a long lower section 2 and short hinged upper sections adapted to contact at their ends when extended and collapsed to form a rigid ladder. A cord from a spring-controlled drum 13 mounted on a cross-bar between rafters in the floor space of the loft, is attached to the head of the ladder, and a cord 21 from another spring-controlled drum 24 is led over a pulley to the bottom end of the ladder at 22. Another cord 27 is attached at 28 to the side of the ladder portion 2 at its upper end, and is led over pulleys 29, 30 to a helical spring 31 attached at its other end to the floor at 32, this spring being extended as the ladder is pulled downwards. Rollers 17 are provided at the head of the ladder to allow free movement, and fixed rollers 19 are provided at the opening to allow the ladder sections to bend freely during movement. Stops 26, 26a are provided to prevent the ladder from passing completely out of the storage space.
