[Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iii)] A chair intended for use in obstetrics comprises a stand 1, 4, Fig. 1, carrying a horizontal shaft on which is tiltably mounted the chair proper comprising a back portion 20 and a seat portion 23, the whole of the chair being adapted to be tilted about the shaft to any angle, and the angle of the back relative to the seat being adjustable, clampable friction discs being provided to secure the chair in adjusted position. The stand comprises a U-shaped frame 1 of metal tube the upper ends of which are secured to dished friction discs 2, and a U-shaped frame 4 the upper ends of which are secured to flanged collars 6, the frames being connected by pivoted links 7. Each disc 2, Fig. 3, has a boss 8 which rides loosely on the collar 6, which in turn rides loosely on a boss 9 mounted slidably and rotatably on a cylindrical head 10 secured to one part of a two-part shaft 11, the two parts of which are connected together by screwed parts 12, 14. The outer part 15 of the head 10 has flats to engage a handle 17. Rotation of the handle in one direction draws the upper parts of the frame together. The boss 9 carries a disc 18 having friction linings 19 which fric- , tionally engage the disc 2 on one side, and discs 26 on a tubular cross member 27 on the other side. The chair back comprises a U-shaped frame 20, Fig. 1, the ends of which are secured to sockets on the discs 18, and a seat part 23, the side members of which are secured at the rear in sockets 25, Fig. 3, on the discs 26. Increase of pressure on the friction discs thus secures both seat and back in any position, but they may be secured in a predetermined relation by means of spring pins 28 on the discs 26 which engage holes in the 'disc 18. Similarly spring pins 30 on the disc 2 engage in holes' in the disc 18 to lock the back relatively to the stand. The seat back is provided with upholstery, preferably removable, e.g., a bag-like cover, and the seat may have any form of supporting surface, but preferably two wide bands 31, Fig. 4, are secured to the bottom of the back and are normally crossed, passed over the front bar 24 of the seat frame and secured to the sides 23 thereof. For certain operations, these bands are drawn up between the limbs of the occupant, passed outwardly over the thighs, then downwardly and secured to the frame side members. A tubular leg rest frame 34 is adjustably mounted on the front of the seat frame: The Provisional Specification states that the invention is applicable to adjustable seats and couches and to operating and other tables.
