Abstract

506,348. Valve circuits for wireless reception; magnetrons. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov,. 25, 1937, No. 32492. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1936. [Classes 39 (i) and 40(v)] A short-wave receiver comprises two magnetrons subject to a common magnetic field, one fed by incoming oscillations and the other generating oscillations of a different frequency, electrodes of the two magnetrons being coupled together so that the oscillations are combined to produce an intermediate frequency. As shown, the two magnetrons 7, 9 ; 17, 19 are mounted in the same envelope and the anodes are coupled together by a capacity coupling 21. Each pair of anodes is connected to an adjustable resonant line 3, 23. Incoming signals are applied from aerial 1 to the first magnetron and the second magnetron acts as a local oscillator, the resultant intermediate frequency being taken off at tuned circuit 41. The potentiometers 31, 29 feeding anode voltage, the sliders 5, 25 tuning the lines 3, 23, and the rheostat 15 in the circuit providing the magnetic field may have a common control so that the magnetrons always operate under optimum conditions in accordance with formulae given in the Specification. In modifications, the anodes of the two magnetrons are arranged alternately and concentrically around and at the same or different distances from a common central cathode, Fig. 2 (not shown), or are spaced along a common central cathode 60 as shown in Fig. 3. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 483,336.
