Abstract

503,927. Bottling. WORSSAM & SON, Ltd., G. J., and FOX, D. P. S. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27987. [Class 125 (ii)] A filling head having a rotary valve operated automatically in step-by-step fashion comprises a valve 26 which is seated at the foot of the filling tube 19 and is positively opened by mechanical means associated with the rotary member 2 of the rotary valve. As shown, the mechanical means is an eccentric pin 31 on which is rotatably mounted a ring 32 which, when the plug is rotated, depresses a block 28, which carries the valve, against a spring 29. The ring 32 carries a pin 34 which, when the plug is moved to the " all-closed " position shown, pushes the float-valve 14 off its seating 13. For rotating the plug 2 there is provided a star wheel 5 having a square-holed hub 4 fitting over a squared part 7 of the plug. The plug has two right-angled passages 43, 44 spaced apart axially, the passage 44 terminating in a groove 45 on the face of the plug. In operation, the plug is turned, in four stages, through one complete revolution. First, counter pressure is established in the bottle by turning the plug through 90‹ from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 so that the two arms of the passage 43 connect passage 36, leading from the counterpressure tube 41, with a passage 35, 39 connected with an adapter tube 20. Then the plug is turned a further 90‹ so that (a) the passage 43 connects passage 35, 39 to a gas escape port 37 connected with a fob-return pipe, and (b) ring 32 depresses block 28 to admit liquid to the bottle. Next the plug is turned a further 90‹ so that passage 43 is closed and passage 44, which has hitherto been closed, now joins passage 35, 39 and a port 38 to apply an adjusted levelling pressure to the liquid in the bottle, as described in Specification 503,926. Finally the plug is turned to the position shown. When, during filling, a bottle or the rod 27 supporting the valve 26 breaks, the valve 14 stops flow of liquid.
