Abstract

Bottling.-Relates to rotary bottling-machines of the type in which the rotary member carries a number of reciprocating bottle supports and the same number of filling-heads connected to a chamber containing air or gas under pressure and a supply of liquid. The filling-heads are controlled by plugs which are automatically operated and rotated in one direction to turn the fluid on or off. According to the invention the device for effecting the one-way rotation of the plug 4 comprises a star wheel having one or more sets of arms 5 and a prong 6 in rear of each set of arms. As a bottle 24 rotates in its support a pawl 14 is actuated against a spring 17 by the sliding rod 10 to cause a stop rod 16 to engage a prong 6 and turn the star wheel about its axis. Stops which co-operate with the arms 5 are mounted on the stationary annular ring 8 which is carried on supports 9. The initial position of the plug 4 and the star wheel are determined by a gravity stop-pawl 19 pivoted on the side 1<1> of the liquid container, which permits a prong 6 to only pass freely in the operative direction, the starting position being that in which the prong 6 is on the stop side of the pawl 19. The duct 21 and the port 25 in the plug admit the liquid to the bottle, the duct 22 and port 26 provide a pressure equalizing channel, and the duct 23 and port 27 provide an escape for air, gas or fob. An additional duct and port may be provided for the passage of air or gas under pressure from an independent source. A ball valve 29 in a retaining cage 30 controls the flow of liquid to the bottle. In a modification a resilient device is provided for locating the initial position of the plug. The bottles may be cam or air operated and means may be provided for turning the star wheel into its initial position in the event of a broken bottle being raised in one of he supports. A spring-pressed stop may also be fitted to the annular ring 8 to operate the prongs 6 and prevent the filling operation.
