Abstract
503,926. Bottling. WORSSAM & SON, Ltd., G. J., and FOX, D. P. S. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27986. [Class 125 (ii)] In a counter-pressure liquid-bottling machine of the type in which a filling valve is opened after the counter-pressure charging of a bottle and closed after application of a levelling pressure, the air or gas displaced during filling is discharged through a pipe 20 into a pressure chamber 22 and thence through an adjustable release valve 29 to the atmosphere, pressure gas being admitted to the chamber 22 from the gas space of the filling tank 1 through a pipe 25 and valve 26 which prevents back-flow of (possibly contaminated) air or gas from the chamber to the tank. The valve 29 is adjusted to blow off at a predetermined pressure, froth collected in the tray 27 being blown off at the same time. A levelling pressure is applied to the liquid in the bottle after filling by connecting the space above the said liquid to a pressure bell 23 via pipe 21 (see Specification 457,312). The filling valve 16 is opened against spring action by a cam 17 on the rotary valve 12. When the liquid level in the tank 1 falls, a valve 7 controlled by the float 6 is opened and gas passes to a pressure-sensitive device 9 which opens the liquid valve 3a. When the valve 7 is closed the gas escapes from device 9 by a weep hole 10. Fig. 1 is a diagram illustrating the machine ; Fig. 2 shows a rotary machine embodying the principles thereof. In Fig. 2 the non-return valve 26 is a gravity-closed flap and the discharge end of the pipe 20 is closed by a nail valve 56. The pressure bell 23 is vertically adjustable so that the level to which the bottles are filled can be adjusted. Air supplied under pressure to the bell may escape via saw cuts 23a in the rim thereof when the pressure in the bell exceeds that corresponding to the water column h. Pressure from tank 1 to device 9 via pipe 8 is transmitted by glycerine contained in a pot 38. The annular tank 1 is encased in heat-insulating material such as solid sealed cork or waterproofed cork. The filling heads are supported independently of the tank so that the upthrust of the bottles is taken mainly by the support 37 and not by the tank. The filling heads and bottle lifts may be those described in Specifications 503,850 and 503,927 respectively.
