MACHINE FOR VACUUM FILLING Filed Nov. 20, 1946 Patented May 30, 1950 J use! Elnar Jonsson, Linkiiping, Sweden Application November 20, 1946, Serial No. 711,018 In Sweden November 29, 1945 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in automatically rotating vacuum filling machines in which the bottles are filled in dependence on the movement of the machine and in which the air in the bottle to be filled is sucked out by means of a vacuum pipe and the liquid is allowed to flow down through a pipe extending from the filling means into the bottle. In these machines each bottle is moved upwardly by a support towards a sealing ring, e. g. of rubber, located on the filling means, and as soon as the sealing has been effected the air is sucked out and the liquid flows down into the bottle. After the bottle has been filled, part oi. the liquid is sucked up into the vacuum pipe to a level corresponding to the prevailing vacuum and the nature of the liquid. It now the bottle is allowed to move downwardly with the bottle support, the liquid contained in the vertical part of the filling means, i. e. in the pipe extending into the bottle, flows down into the bottle mouth and is sucked up into the vacuum pipe. That part of the liquid which has not had time to enter the vacuum pipe trickles down on the bottle respectively outside the bottle due to the shape of the lower part of the vacuum pipe. Moreover, there is a, great risk of hanging drops which soon fall down. In order to prevent this, the bottle has earlier been lowered a step of a few millimeters by means oi. the bottle support before said support is definitely lowered for taking the bottle away from the sealing ring and as a consequence the flowing down liquid has correctly entered the bottle. However, this additional movement complicates the process.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate this drawback, whereby the advantage is obtained that the new pneumatically guided bottle supports, which are excellent in many respects, may be used. The invention is substantially characterised by the fact that the filling means is provided with an opening, which is covered by a valve. During the rotation of the filling means said valve is adapted to cooperate with a cam surface or the like for opening the valve after the bottle has been filled, in order that the liquid in the filling means shall sink back and the liquid in the pipe extending into the bottle shall be sucked out from the same and up into the vacuum pipe. Other objects of the invention will be clear from the following description.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawin wherein: Figure 1 is a side view and a, vertical section 01 a filling device arranged according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a side view at right angles to the first mentioned view.
The liquid is kept in a, container 1, from which a pipe 2 extends upwardly to a filling means 3. A vertical pipe 4 intended to be inserted in a bottle II projects from said filling means 3. A vacuum pipe l5 leading to a vacuum source is also located in said pipe 4. Below the pipe 4 there is located a bottle support III which from a lower position, in which the support is shown in its entirety, is adapted to be pushed upwardly to the shown upper position and to move the bottle upwardly towards a centering element l2 fixed in the filling means. Said centering element guides the bottle towards a rubber sealing H which is placed round the pipe 4. In the drawing, the bottle is shown in this upper position. These details are well known matters.
According to the invention the filling means is provided with an opening which is covered by a valve 5 and can connect the interior of said filling means to the atmosphere. The valve 5, which through the intermediary of a rubber plate 6 rests against the opening in the filling means, is swingably mounted thereon at 1 and provided with a roller 8 which during the rotation of the filling means is adapted to roll on a cam surface 9. Said cam surface is constructed and shaped in such manner that the valve is lifted from its seat each time a bottle has been filled. By this the liquid in the pipe 4 will be sucked down from said pipe and up into the vacuum pipe. For the same reason the liquid level in the bottles never rises above the mouth of the vacuum pipe and in this manner the level of the liquid becomes constant in all bottles. No drops will remain on the filling means or fall down on the outside of the bottles.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vacuum filling machine for bottles, rotatable filling means, a device for creating a vacuum in the bottles prior to the filling operation, said filling means being provided with an opening for neutralization of the vacuum, a valve to keep said opening closed during the filling operation, a cam stationary in relation to the filling means and adapted to cooperate with said valve to open same after the bottle has been filled in order to interrupt the supply of liquid.
2. A filling machine, as claimed in claim 1, in which the valve is swingably mounted on the filling means and a spring to hold the valve closed.
contact with the said cam.
