Abstract

503,607. Hardening oils and fats. IRMEN, P. Sept. 9, 1937, No. 24590. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1936. [Class 91] Oils and fats are hardened and stabilized with accompanying purification and deodorization by heating to 76-110‹C. in presence of water, one or more salts of phosphoric acid, higher alcohols, and esters of high molecular fatty acids with high molecular monohydric or polyhydric alcohols. Oils treated include olive, rapeseed, soya, fatty mustard, ground nut, castor, sweet almond, cottonseed, and coconut oils, and mixtures thereof. Phosphates suitable are tri-sodium or tri-potassium orthophosphate or pyro-phosphate, or mixtures thereof. Higher alcohols are aliphatic alcohols containing at least 16 C atoms, e.g. cetyl, octadecyl, arachyl, carnaubyl, ceryl, montanyl, and melissyl. The esters are of fatty acids containing at least 16 C atoms, e.g. palmitic, carnaubic, cerotic, montanic and melissic acids, with fatty alcohols, preferably monohydric containing at least 16 C atoms. Waxes, e.g. beeswax, carnauba wax,' Ghedda wax, Chinese insect wax, or artificial waxes derived from the oxidation of paraffin, are preferably used for both the mono and/or polyhydric alcohols and esters. In an example, a solution of 70 gm: of beeswax in 1000 gm. of olive oil at 95-100‹ C.. is stirred into a boiling solution of 30 gm. of a 1 : 1 mixture of trisodium and tri-potassium orthophosphate in 2000 gm. of water; on cooling, the oil solidifies as an upper layer, which is washed with warm water after the lower emulsion layer has been run off.
