503,225. Manufacture of iron. FOX, C. S. Sept. 28, 1937, No. 26280. Drawings to Specification. [Class 72] [Also in Group V] Iron is obtained in a two-stage process for the manufacture of aluminous cement. Bauxite, laterite or like alumina and iron-containing material of low silica content is intimately mixed with limestone, chalk or the like in such proportions as will yield an eutectic slag of approximately 49À5 per cent lime, 43À7 per cent alumina, and 6À8 per cent silica. This is briquetted with an aluminous cement to resist crushing and abrasion, and smelted in a blast furnace. The yield of iron may be increased by the addition of iron ore. The slag is run off and fused with adjusting material to give a cement of approximately 42 parts lime, 48 parts alumina, and 7 parts silica.
