Abstract

503,170. Making pistons, bearings, &c. SCHMIDT GES., K. July 14, 1938, No. 20949. Convention date, July 20, 1937. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the manufacture of pistons, bearings, and other machine parts subject to sliding friction two different light metal alloys such as aluminium alloys are superimposed in a heated state and pressed into union by a mechanical press. In Fig. 1 is shown a pair of plates 3, 4 of different material placed in a die 1 and acted on by a press head 2, the resultant body being shown in Fig. 3. After cutting along a line I-I the surplus material at the bottom is removed and the other part finished as a bearing by machining. The supporting metal may be chosen for its sliding properties and the inner for strength or thermal conductivity. Three materials may be superimposed as for example in the production of a piston. Suitable alloy compositions are given for the bearing surface and the supporting shell.
