Abstract
502,900. Actuation of switches. SIEMENS & GENERAL ELECTRIC RAILWAY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., CANDLER, J. E., and HOPKINS, R. W. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23123. [Class 38 (v)] A switch is operated by the passage of a vehicle over a treadle which ejects liquid from a reservoir into a float chamber and produces movement of a float to operate contacts. The float chamber is enclosed by a flexible diaphragm which separates the contacts from the liquid and prevents the escape of liquid during transport. Mercury is forced past a ball valve 4 into a float chamber 3 where it lifts the float 2 which moves a contact carrier 8 to which it is joined by a rod passing through a flexible diaphragm 6. Contacts 7 on flexible arms 13 move between fixed contacts 14 attached to a terminal board 10 to terminals 11 on which the moving contacts 7 are connected by conducting springs 12 2 which serve to guide the float 2. The mercury can return to the reservoir through a small hole in cup 3 and a ball valve 5 after the vehicle has passed. Specification 237,473, [Class 38 (v)], is referred to.
