Abstract

502,690. Rotary compressors; substitutes for stuffing-bozes. NICHOLS, T. W. Sept. 22, 1937, Nos. 25741/37 and 15736/38. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v)] Compressors of sliding-vane or Roots'-blower types, are cooled by the spraying of liquid through jets 11, 12, into the working chamber, the mixture of compressed medium and liquid passing out through a delivery port 44. 'Cooling, liquid preferably water, may also circurate through the rotor and casing. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, an eccentric rotor 4 in a casing 1 is mounted on a shaft 5 which drives a pump 6, also of the sliding vane type. Water enters the pump 6 through an inlet 7, and is delivered through pipes 8 to the jets provided in non-corrodible plates 13, 14. The pump may also supply, separately, the cooling passages in the stator and rotor. The supply to the jets is controlled by a regulator 15. The port 44 leads to a receiver 18 by way of a non-return valve and a pipe 17, which reaches to the bottom of the receiver. Compressed air and water pass out of the pipe through small holes which are arranged below the level of the water in the receiver. Air passes out of the latter through a pipe 23. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which air pressure in the receiver 18 forces water through a valve 24, a cooler 27, and past an automatic valve 26 to the sprays. The pump 6 supplies cooling liquid to the cooler 27 through a pipe 22. The cooler may be arranged on the outlet side of the stator, or on the inlet pipe 7. When' the compressor is started up, air is delivered through the port 44; raises a valve 16, and in doing so lifts the ball valve 26, to allow water to pass to the sprays. When the compressor stops, valves 16, 26 return to their seats. To prevent water percolating to the bearings, stainless steel plates 29 and spring rings 31 are arranged as seals. Plates 33 deflect leakage water into channels 37 and to drains 39. Packings 35 are also provided. The drains 39 may lead to the compressor casing prior to the air inlet port. -Jets may also be arranged' around the casing. Specifications 433,459, 435,612, and 467,022 are referred to. The first Provisional Specification refers to the use of vanes of plastic or laminated materials.
