Abstract
502,518. Coating wire. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 28, 1938, No. 12724. Convention date, April 30, 1937. [Class 95] An electric conductor is insulated with a synthetic plastic material by passing it through a hot solution of the insulating-material in a water-miscible solvent, e.g. acetonyl acetone or dioxane, then through a bath of water to extract the' solvent and finally through a drying oven. In a modification, water-immiscible alcohol-soluble solvents such as fenchone are used and the coated conductor is treated with an alcohol. The plastic material may be, a cellulose derivative, e.g. nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate or ethyl cellulose, a polyvinyl halide such as polyvinyl chloride, a polyvinyl ester, or the reaction product of formaldehyde with hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. The example describes the use of a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, triphenyl phosphate, white lead and asbestine. The insulating material may be applied to bare wire or to wire insulated for example with rubber. Pigments may be added to the coating composition.
