Abstract
502,349. Fuel-injection pumps. RAVEN, A. R. F. Sept. 13, 1937, No. 24864. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] A fuel - injection pump comprises a body 1 screwed into the engine cylinder and carrying a cylinder 4 in which a plunger 11 and sleeve 12 are fitted. The sleeve 12 is loaded by a spring 19 which is stronger than the spring 30 loading a valve 23 which is fluted at 27. The plunger is pressed down by the spring 30 and fuel is drawn into chamber 13 through ports 14, An abutment 37 having grooves 38 is secured to the engine piston and strikes the plunger 11 to deliver fuel through the valve 23 into the engine cylinder. The quantity of fuel injected is controlled by adjusting the sleeve 12 vertically by a ring 32 having inclined teeth engaging teeth on a ring 31 fixed to the sleeve. If excessive pressure occurs in the chamber 13, the sleeve 12 is raised against the spring 19 and uncovers ports 40. The housing 1 and the cylinder flange 5 have opposite pitch threads 6, 7, engaging a sleeve 8 which when rotated raises or lowers the cylinder 4 to vary the time of injection. The pump may be arranged horizontally and operated by a cam on the engine piston.
