Abstract

501,625. Clamps. BRITISH BELTING & ASBESTOS, Ltd., THORNTON, E., and HALEY, G. L. Dec. 3, 1937, No. 33506. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A clamp for holding friction linings to brake shoes for riveting is adapted to apply localized pressure to the lining and shoe in such a manner as to impart tension to the lining. In Figs. 1, 2, the shoe 6 and lining 7 are gripped between the parts 4 of the clamp and a sliding block 8 engaged by the screw 9. The gripping faces of the parts 4, 8 are inclined as shown so that the direction of the pressure is inclined to the radial line a-a of the shoe and thus tension is imparted to the lining. The parts 4 are gapped to receive the shoe web 5 and guides 13 are provided for the block 8. In modifications the screw 9 is offset from the plane of the arms 3 of the clamp and is parallel to or inclined to that plane and the end of the screw may engage the lining directly. Figs. 6, 7 show a clamp adjustable for different sizes of shoes in which side arms 22 having upturned pointed ends 23a for engaging the shoe 6 are suspended by pins 23 from and between the side plates 17 of a bridge piece. The screw 20 passes through a trunnion 19 pivoted between the plates 17 and is attached to a sliding member 26, 27 which embraces the arms 22 and engages the lining 7. This member comprises side plates 26, end parts 27 and a central block 25 for the screw, the plates 26 differing in depth as shown, so that tension is applied to the lining.
