501,391. Mercury switches. FELTEN & GUILLEAUME CARLSWERK AKT.-GES. July 22, 1938, No. 21782. Convention date, July 23, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] Depression of a rail 1 by passage of a railway vehicle depresses a diaphragm 2 to increase the pressure in a tube 5 and decrease the pressure in a tube 6 and so move a mercury column 7 to connect a contact 9 with a contact 10. On return of the diaphragm 2, the mercury falls back until its surface reaches the end of a nozzle 14 on the end of tube 5. The opening of the nozzle is made so small that mercury does not enter it so that further return of the mercury to open the circuit is delayed until pressure above the columns is equalized through a porous body 12.
