Abstract
501,345. Casting slip. CRONING, J. Aug. 24, 1937, No. 23242. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A core for use in casting metal is made by pouring a slip made from clay, kaolin, quartz, chamotte, barium sulphate or the like into a two part plaster of Paris mould and, after allowing sufficient time for the deposition of a hollow core, pouring out the excess. The core contracts from the mould during drying and car then be removed. After use the core can be removed from a casting, by shaking out if it sinters and breaks, this being favoured if the core is thin, or by disintegrating in water if o a material, such as .fatty clay or kaolin, which contracts more rapidly than the cast metal. The porosity of the core can be increased by adding to the slip granular naphthalene or other material which can be gasefied by heat before or during. casting or by perforating the core while plastic. This may be done by a hand guided tool having pins h reciprocated by a cam c on a shaft b driven at 2,000 revolutions per minute. The holes may be about 6À1 to 0À2 mm. in diameter to avoid penetration by the molten metal.
