[Class 17 (ii)] A heel adapted for interengagement with the rear end of a short outsole has at the upper portion of its breast a forwardly-project ing lip sufliciently thin and narrow to lie between the outsole and the shoe bottom, and below the lip is formed a ledge which forms with the undersurface of the lip a sole-receiving channel of a width equal to the thickness of the rear end of the sole and which terminates in the attaching face of the heel adjacent the breast corners. The heel may in the case of a high Cuban heel, as shown, be prepared from a heel blank of the type used to make what are sometimes known as Continental Louis heels which has a forwardly projecting lip extending across the full width of the breast face. The sides of this lip may be trimmed by a pair of spaced milling cutters and the heel is then presented to a rotating tubular or barrel saw to produce the channel 22. The top face 30 of the blank is then shaped to heel seat form, and the heel covered or lacquered. The short outsole is cut in accordance with the channel in the breast face of the heel before it is attached and the heel seat of the shoe may be built up by a piece of sheet material or by applying plastic material such as cellulosic cement and sawdust. One or more heelattaching nails may be driven into the portion of the outsole which lies within the channel. The invention may be applied to Louis heels.
