Abstract

500,494. Porous bricks. SOUTH METROPOLITAN GAS CO., and LAMPREY, R. H. B. Aug. 13, 1937, No. 22312. [Class 70] [Also in Group X] A porous brick of low thermal conductivity has pores of relatively large area but of little depth produced by incorporating in the material from which the brick is made thin discs or plates of combustible material such as thick paper, cardboard, or thin wood. The discs are preferably of uniform size and may be circular or polygonal. The discs are preferably arranged so that the face of each disc is at right-angles to the direction of travel of the heat through the brick. In bricks intended for insulation of heat at a temperature above 500-600‹ C., the discs are preferably only incorporated within that zone of the brick in which in use the heat gradient will have fallen below 500‹ C., e.g. a gas lire back brick of usual thickness 3 inches may be moulded with one half of its thickness of material containing no discs and the remaining half of material containing discs.
