Abstract

500,439. Envelopes &c. PIRIE, APPLETON, & CO., Ltd., and WOLFF, H. Aug. 17, 1937, No. 22569. [Class 146 (ii)] A self-adhesive envelope of the kind including means for preventing premature contact between related adhesive coatings on the sealing flap and rear wall of the envelope respectively, has a plain and uncoated separate slip of paper &c. which is held in position to cover and protect one of the coatings by a pocket or pocket-like parts formed or provided in the envelope structure, the protective slip being readily disengageable from the envelope or movable on the envelope to expose the coating when the' envelope is to be sealed. The envelope shown in Fig. 8 is for postal transmission at the cheap rate, and comprises a front wall 1 having integral therewith a sealing flap 3, side flaps 19, 20, and a bottom flap 2 which forms the back of the envelope. The flap 19 is adhesively attached to the back wall 2 at the lower portion only to leave a pocket 9, but the flap 20 is merely tucked between the front and back walls. An extension 21 of the back wall is folded over the outside face of the back wall and adhesively attached thereto at the lower portion only to leave a pocket 21a. A protective slip of paper 7 is adapted to slide in the pockets to cover the adhesive coating 6 on the back wall. As shown, the slip is cut away at one end to provide a tag 22, the cut-away end facilitating ready removal of the slip 7 when the envelope is to be sealed by superimposing the adhesive coating 5 on the flap 3 on the coating 6 of the back wall. Where the slip 7 is not cut away at one end, ready removal of the slip is facilitated by a thumb recess 10 provided at the upper edge of the back wall, or the top end of the slip 7 may be folded over. In modifications, where the envelope is of the kind which does not permit of inspection of the contents when closed, the pockets are formed at each side by folded portions integral with the front wall, or by separate portions adhesively attached to the back wall. The adhesive coating on the sealing flap may have a protective slip positioned thereover by forming pockets on the side edges of that flap. In the form of envelope shown in Fig. 12, the protective slip 7 is formed with reduced tag-like ends 15 which can be slid into socket-like pockets 16. Instead of removing the protective slip from the envelope, the slip may be slid along the envelope to expose the related coating of adhesive. The pockets in one modification are shallow in depth, and the protective slip comprises a rectangular sheet provided with a slit or slot at each end to provide two tongues one of which slides into the pocket. A single pocket may be arranged at one side of, or across, the envelope.
