Abstract

499,993. Vehicle opening-tops electric motor control systems. OVERTON, W. Oct. 29, 1937, No. 29570. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a vehicle having a roof aperture closable by a sliding panel or equivalent electrically operated member, a nut 14 or like screw-actuated element is adapted at the limits of its travel, corresponding to the extreme positions of the sliding panel &c., to actuate switches for stopping the electric motor which drives the main operating-shaft 5 for moving the sliding panel and carrying the nut &c. 14. In the construction shown a reversible electric motor 6 is controlled by a pair of press button switches 31, 32, which are adapted to be closed by a hand-actuated universally-jointed switch lever 25, which is guided by a vertical plate having a straight slot 23 terminating in bayonet portions 29, 30. The end 28 of the lever 25 can be displaced from the bayonet portions of the slot, in which position one or other of the switches 31, 32 is closed, by means of pivoted levers 18, 19, which are actuated when a pin 15 on the nut 14 reaches the limits of its travel in a guide slot 16, Thus, when the hand lever 25 has been engaged in one bayonet slot 29 or 30 to start the motor 6 and cause the shaft 5 to be driven through gearing 8, the nut 14 and pin 15 will be traversed until the latter contacts with and rocks one of the levers 18 or 19, causing the end 28 of the switch lever to be displaced and stopping the motor. In addition, owing to the fixed abutment afforded by the pin 15, the motor cannot again be started in the same direction, thus preventing straining of the operating-mechanism and sliding panel. A readily disconnectible handle 10 may be provided for manual operation of the shaft 5 when desired.
