Abstract
Polymerization products are prepared by heating a solution of styrene in an inert solvent in the absence of the usual polymerization catalysts, but in the presence of a small amount, namely not more than one per cent by weight, of a hydrocarbon having at least two aliphatic >C = CH2 groups separated by at least two carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons specified are p - divinyl benzene, a : a 1 - dimethyl - p - divinyl benzene, divinyl acetylene, 4 : 41-divinyl - diphenyl, 1 : 4 - divinyl naphthalene, p : p1-divinyl stilbene and 1 : 3 : 5-hexatriene. Specified solvents are benzene, ethyl benzene, carbon tetrachloride and isopropyl benzene. The solution of styrene in isopropyl benzene may be obtained by subjecting isopropyl benzene to pyrolysis. In examples, a solution of styrene in isopropyl benzene is heated with a hydrocarbon fraction, obtained by the intensive cracking of p-di-isopropyl benzene in the presence of hydrogen, and containing about 25 per cent of divinylated hydrocarbons consisting mainly of divinyl benzene with small amounts of a : a 1-dimethyl-p-divinyl benzene.
