Abstract

Suppositories are formed from a mixture of insulin with a relatively large proportion of a non-irritant carrier and a small proportion of a non-irritant acid serving to protect the insulin against destruction by intestinal enzymes. Surface-tension reducing agents may also be added to accelerate resorption of the insulin. According to examples the carrier substance is cocoa butter, the acid is lactic acid or a mixture of lactic, citric and palmitic acids and the surface-tension reducer is a saponin. Other carriers referred to are low-melting fats, soaps, glycerol soap (fat, soap and glycerin), agar-agar, and gelatine; another suitable acid is tartaric acid; and other suitable surface-tension reducing substances are glycyrrhizines, soaps, soap-like sulphonated compounds, and alkali salts of naphthenic acids. Specifications 315,709, [Class 81 (i)], and 439,856 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to preparations containing a surface-tension reducing agent but no acid, and to the use of acetic acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
