Abstract
499,773. Needled fibrous materials. TURNBULL, H. T., and LINTAFELT, Ltd. July 28, 1937, No. 20903. [Class 42 (ii)] [Also in Group IX] Compacted pads of coconut fibre, sisal, &c. for stuffing furniture cushions, mattresses, &c. are cut from a sheet produced by passing the fibres 1 between one or more pairs of compression rolls 3, then under one or more rows of barbed needles 7 on a vertically-moved bar. The needles pass through the fibre and through holes in a metal plate 4 and into a rubber pad 8 and they cause the fibres to become interlocked. These may be temporarily supported during the needling by a paper backing 10, which is subsequently removed by hand, or, as shown, by passing the material through draw rolls 11, 12. The backing is removed between the roll 12 and a roll 13, whilst the fibre &c. is reeled or folded at 14.
