Abstract

499,604. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1937, No. 30379. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An electron-discharge device, particularly for generating ultra-high frequencies of 3000 megacycles or more, comprises a cylindrical metal shell 11 enclosing a tubular portion 17 coaxial with the shell and having a plane end face 18 serving as an electrode adjacent a metallic plate or diaphragm 15 serving as another electrode, the portion 17 being carried by a flexible disc or flange 19 perpendicular to its axis, the flange 19 being attached to a further disc or flange 12 on the shell 11 by a peripheral sealing ring 20, whereby the spacing between the flanges is adjustable in order to vary the interelectrode capacity and thus the frequency generated. In the form shown, the surface 18 is coated with electron emissive material and heated by a heater 22, the leads to which pass out through a pinch 24. The capacity is varied by a clamp 30 and screws 33. The diaphragm 15 acts as the anode and may be vibrated by polepiece 36 and electromagnet 37, to modulate the frequency generated by the diode ; an electrodynamic or electrostatic drive may also be used. The tubular cathode support has annular grooves 28 to reduce heat losses, and the space within it is placed in communication with the discharge space by holes 29, the whole being evacuated by tube 26. The space behind the diaphragm 15 is separate from the discharge space but is evacuated to the same degree by tube 43.
