Abstract

499,227. Tipping vehicles. BROMILOW & EDWARDS, Ltd., and SWIFT, H. W. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23046. [Class 108 (i)] In hydraulic tipping gear for three-way-tipping vehicle bodies, including telescopic ram units pivotally mounted on trunnions 4 for movement in a lateral plane in a cradle 2 which itself is pivotally connected to the vehicle frame 3 by transversely-arranged trunnions 5, the liquid is conveyed from a pump or other device by a pipe 7 to a gland 8 on the outside of a hollow cradle-trunnion 5, through the trunnion, through a pipe 16 to glands or stuffing-boxes similar to the gland 8 on one set (not shown) of the ram-trunnions, then through annular or partannular ducts 17 in the ram cylinders 1 to the opposite ram-trunnions 4, and finally through junction-boxes 20 and piping 22 to the lower ends of the ram cylinders. As shown, each ram unit comprises an inverted cylinder 1 closed at its lower end and a telescopic ram slidable within the cylinder, the ram having at least two telescopic portions 31, 39, one (39) being adapted at its upper end for connection to the vehicle body. For end tipping the rams move in unison with the cradle pivoting about the trunnions 5 while for side tipping the cradle remains stationary and the outer ram moves a relatively greater distance than the inner ram, both rams pivoting about their respective trunnions 4. To tip the body liquid is pumped into the pipe 7 under the control of a manually-operated valve and passes through the trunnions 5, 4 down the pipe 22 which swings with the ram cylinder, and into the interior of the cylinder to force up the intermediate ram plunger 31, and simultaneously the liquid passes through a bore 37 in a spigot 34 on the ram plunger 31 to the interior of the plunger to force up the plunger 39. The plunger 39, which has a spherical bearing 44 and split retaining ring 47 for a ball 45 on a plate 46 secured to the vehicle body 40, is slidable in a guide collar 43 on the plunger 31 which in turn is slidable in a collar 42 in the cylinder 1. The pump may be driven from the vehicle engine or by an electric motor or may be hand operated.
