Abstract

499,142. Frequency-altering systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 14, 1937, No. 19537. Convention date, July 18, 1936. [Class 40 (iii)] Mixed frequencies, which may be derived from an aperiodic antenna through resistancecoupled amplifiers, are separated by converting them into waves in an elastic medium and using a diffraction grating or the like for the purpose of selecting a restricted wave band with uniform attenuation. The mixed electrical frequencies are applied to an aperiodic quartz transmitter QA which is immersed in water or some other fluid medium and screened by absorptive walls PA. In front of the crystal is a diffraction grating E, and at the spectral bands of the first order for a series of different frequencies are piezo-electric receivers, which may comprise either undamped crystals q, or damped crystals q<1> associated with steel blocks or the like a, a<1>, the lengths of these blocks being such that they resonate at the frequencies to be selected. The direct wave is absorbed by spongy rubber or the like SA. The rays may be further dispersed by means of a parabolic reflector, Fig. 4 (not shown).
