[Class 40 (iv)] In a multiplex carrier system in which carrier frequencies are harmonics of a fundamental wave which is outside the transmission range of the system, (e.g. outside the range of the repeaters), two pilot waves differing in frequency by the fundamental frequency are sent over the system and used at the receiving end for deriving a wave of the fundamental frequency for the control of a harmonic generator for demodulation. The pilots may be used in addition for the purpose of automatic volume control. They may be derived from a square wave generator which supplies odd harmonics for use as signal carriers and in practice always includes even harmonics in its output, or may be obtained by modulating a carrier not corresponding to any harmonic with the fundamental frequency. Filters of the kind employing piezo-electric elements may be used. Specification 389,917, [Group XL], is referred to.
