Abstract
499,024. Centrifugal separators. LOUMIET ET LAVIGNE, J. May 14, 1937, No. 13678. Convention date, May 14, 1936. [Class 23] A fluid mixture is separated into its component parts by its passage under pressure through an helical tube H, the cross-section of which has its major dimension arranged transversely to the axis A of the helix; the tube is divided longitudinally by partitions to segregate the separated components. The entry portion T is of circular section and it is gradually broadened while its sectional area remains constant until it joins the first turn S of the helix. As the tube of the helix broadens, it is divided by an increasing number of partitions 55, 56, 59 and the heavier particles of the mixture in the sections so formed move towards the outer walls of their sections. Consecutive sets of partitions, for instance the sets 56, 59, are arranged so that the heavy particles from one section with the light particles from its adjacent outer section pass together to the next section ahead for re-treatment. All the heavy particles thus eventually arrive at the extreme outer wall where they can be discharged at various stages through the tubes Ex, while the light particles are similarly discharged from the inner wall through tubes E<3> to a common discharge pipe E. Various devices for skimming the heavy or light particles from the sections for re-treatment are described, and carrier fluids may be injected into the flow to assist in the separating action. When, for instance, a flow has been established through the helical tube H, Fig. 22, a fluid mixture may be injected through the pipe I and its components extracted by side tubes E<1>, E<11>. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications in which baffles are used instead of partitions, and also a modification in which gas is allowed to expand in a helical tube with an elongated flange-like extension to increase the frictional effect; this produces local heat which may be absorbed by a fluid circulating in a channel about the extension. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
