Abstract
498,947. Mudguards. OTTAWAY, E. C., and LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD. Nov. 26, 1937, No. 32623. [Class 136 (i)] A vehicle mudguard formed wholly or partly of resilient material, such as rubber, is supported at one point on the vehicle chassis, and at another point on the vehicle body, e.g. through a rigid member which forms the rear part of the mudguard and is carried by the vehicle body, whereby movement of the mudguard due to chassis and body distortion is taken up by the resilient material. As shown, the mudguard comprises a rubber part 7 and a rigid part 8, which is bolted at 9 to the body 5. The forward portion of the part 8 is recessed on its upper surface at 10 to receive the rear of the rubber part 7, which is clamped in position by a rod or cable 16 adapted to be tensioned by a nut 18 at each end so as to depress the rubber into a channel 11 in the part 8. The rubber part 7 is supported towards the front from the chassis 15 by a bent stay-arm 12, which is bolted to the rubber by means of flanges 13, 14. The edges of the parts 7, 8, instead of overlapping, may abut and be secured together by a bead ; or they may be bolted respectively to the front and rear of a stay-arm.
