Abstract
Composite piston and like rings comprising inner and outer layers of different metals or alloys are made either by cutting from a pot composed of two superposed cylinders brazed, soldered or welded together, or the two parts are made separately and stacked round a shell of brazing material. The outer ring may be of cast iron and the inner ring of steel. Heat treating may also be effected before or after the rings are parted from the pot so as to harden one or both parts or the hardening may be effected during brazing. The cast iron ring may contain carbon 3,4 per cent (combined carbon 0,65 per cent), silicon 2 per cent, nickel 0,5 per cent, molybdenum 0,6 per cent, and copper 0,3 per cent, and the steel ring may contain carbon 0,5 per cent, chromium 0,75 per cent, and molybdenum 0,25 per cent, so that both components may be hardened at one operation at the same temperature, e.g. 850 DEG C. and subsequently tempered as desired. Hardening may be effected by oil, water or air cooling. The cast iron may be of the austenitic type, in which case the steel only is hardened, e.g. by heat applied behind the composite ring.
