Abstract
524,566. Alloys. WITHERS, J. S. (Morrow, J. G.). Jan. 31, 1939, No. 3269. [Class 82 (i)] Alloy steels, particularly suitable for welding, contain nickel 1.80 to 2.20 per cent., copper 0.90- 1.10 per cent. manganese 0.35-0.70 per cent., silicon 0.10-0.25 per cent., and carbon 0.02-0.20 per cent., the balance being iron. To enhance the machineability of the alloys, sulphur may be added up to 0.10 per cent., and to enhance the hardness and brittleness of the alloys, phosphorus may be added up to 0.03 per cent. Aluminium, acting as a deoxidizer, may be present up to 0.10 per cent. The alloys should be substantially free from chromium and tungsten, these metals, if present, not exceeding 0.05 per cent. while if boron, molybdenum, tantalum, uranium, and vanadium are present, they do not exceed 0.03 per cent. of each of these elements. Welded joints' in articles made of the alloys are made, with or without the use of weld metal of similar composition, without preheating the parts to be welded, and the joint is allowed to cool to room temperature without applying any stress-relieving heat treatment thereto. The alloys are suitable for the production of plates, sheets, rods, tubes and other shapes including one or more welded seams or joints.
