Abstract

A poly-(anthraquinonyl-NH) aryl which contains an acylamino group in at least one of the anthraquinonyl radicles, but in which the aryl radicle is incapable of being vatted and contains not more than three condensed rings, and in which the anthraquinonyl radicles contain three condensed rings only, is treated with sulphuric acid or chlorosulphonic acid, followed, if necessary, by oxidation of the products. The aryls may be of the benzene, naphthalene, or diphenyl series, and acylamino groups may be acetylamino or benzoylamino. The reaction may be accelerated by small amounts of reducing agents (e.g. copper powder, zinc powder, or hydroquinone) and the temperature is preferably not above 50 DEG C. Suitable oxidizing agents are nitrite, bichromate, iron chloride or superoxides. The products dye or print cotton fast brown, currant or grey shades. In examples, condensation products from the following substances are treated with chlorosulphonic acid or sulphuric acid, followed by oxidation: (1) the product from 1 mol. m-dichlorobenzene and 2 mols. of 1-amino-4- (or 5) -benzoylaminoanthraquinone or 1 mol. each of 1-amino-4- and 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone (followed, if desired, by bromination); (2) the product from 1 mol. p p-dibromobenzene, 1 mol. 1 : 4-dichloronaphthalene or 1 mol. 4 : 41-dibromodiphenyl and 2 mols. 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone (followed in the first case by bromination); (3) the product from 1 mol. m-dichlorobenzene, 1 mol. 1-aminoanthraquinone and 1 mol. 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone; (4) the product from 1 mol. of 1 : 3 : 5-tribromobenzene and 3 mols. 1-amino-4 (or 5)-benzoylaminoanthraquinone.
