498,356. Trueing grinding - wheels. FAIRWEATHER. W. C. (La Bougie B. G.) Jan. 10, 1938, No. 669. [Classes 60 and 124] Apparatus for trueing or dressing a grinding-wheel. used for grinding gear teeth comprises, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, a diamond &c. 14 mounted on a rod 13, which is pivoted at 16 to a link 17 pivoted at its other end on a fixed axis 18 and also is slidable in a guide 12 carried by a member 9 movable about an axis 23, which does not coincide with the axis 8, which would be occupied by a gearwheel during grinding ; the axes 8, 23 vary according to the diameter of the gear-wheel and the characteristics of the gear teeth. Figs. 3 and 4 show a machine embodying the above principle, and comprising a support 1 mounted on the axis 8 and having slidable thereon a slide 2 movable by a lever 3 and an adjustable spring 5, a stop 6 being provided to set the initial position of the slide. On the slide is pivoted, about the axis 23, a sector 9 carrying a guide 11x for an adjustable slide 12, perpendicular to the guide 11x, the slide 12 having slidable therein a member 13 carrying the diamond 14. In the member 13 is a slot 15 in which is adjustable the pivot 16 of a link 17, the other end of which is pivoted at 18, the position of the pivot 18 being adjustable by members 19, 20 operated by screws 21, 22 ; an adjustable stop 11 fixes the initial position of the sector 9. In operation, the sector 9 is swung about its pivot by a handle 10, the diamond thereby being moved over the shaped face c of the grinding-wheel M. The apparatus may be mounted on the work carriage of a gear grinding machine. Movement of the slide 2 enables a straight portion to be produced in the wheel profile for grinding straight root flanks on the gear teeth.
