Abstract

497,613. Fluid-pressure servomotorcontrol systems. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 13, 1937, No. 22320. Convention date, Aug. 13, 1936. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A turbine 10 drives apart of a paper making machine through reduction gearing 11 and is controlled by a throttle valve 15 adjusted by a centrifugal governor 36 driven by a synchronous motor 40. The centrifugal governor 36 actuates a control valve 26 controlling a port 25 in a follow-up sleeve 23 which controls the flow of fluid medium from a pipe 19 having a throttle 21 and connected to a cylinder 16 having a spring loaded piston 17. The piston 17 is connected to the valve 15 and through a dashpot 29 to a lever 31 loaded by springs 33, 34 and connected to the sleeve 23. The turbine 10 drives a machine 44 the stator of which is supplied by a threephase network 50 and the frequency at the slip rings 43 is equal to the sum of the frequency of the network 50 and that produced by the speed of the rotor, i.e. the speed of the turbine 10. The slip rings 43 are connected to the motor 40. The speed of the motor 40 remains constant and the speed of the turbine 10 may be varied by varying the frequency of the network 50. This is effected by adjusting the fulcrum 70 of a fluid servomotor 64, similar to the one described above, fitted to the turbine 57 driving the alternator 55. If it is desired to control the speeds of other turbines 12 driving other parts of the paper making machine so that they are equal or proportional to the speed of turbine 10 then each turbine 12 is fitted with a servomotor controlled by a speed governor similar to the turbine 10 but the fulcrum of the lever 94 is adjustable. The turbine 12 drives the shaft 116 connected to a rotor of a machine through a variable speed gear 112 and the stator 122 of the machine is supplied with a current from an alternator 138 driven by the turbine 10. If the frequencies in the rotor and stator vary then the stator will be subjected to a torque and through the lever 104 adjust the lever 94.
