[Class 106 (i)] A corner or other part of a bill is inserted into a slot 14 in a casing 10 and upon the depression of a rod 27 having a handle 26, the main part of the bill is perforated, printed or stamped with the word " Paid," and the corner of the bill is severed and impaled on a spike 33 removably mounted in a part of the casing to which access may be had through a normally locked door 11. Full-stroke means and an item-counter are applied to the operating rod. Perforating means. The main part of the bill is perforated with the word " Paid " by means of dies 54 projecting downwardly from a lateral extension 53 of the operating rod. Depression of the rod causes the dies to pass through perforated plates 55, 56 forming the entrance to the slot 14 into which the bill is inserted. Severing mechanism. The corner of the bill is severed by a pair of pivoted knives 18, 21 arranged at right angles to one another and adapted to co-operate with fixed knives 16, 19 when depressed by a cross-bar 57 of the operating rod. Filing mechanism. A counterweighted filing lever 49 is pivoted to the operating rod 27, and upon the downward movement of the latter is caused to rock clockwise by the abutment of its counterweighted arm with a stop 51, whereby its apertured right-hand arm is caused to press the severed corner of the bill onto the spike 33. The spike is carried by a base 34 slidably withdrawable from the casing upon the unlocking and opening of the door 11. Item-counters. The number of excursions of the operating rod 27 is indicted by a counter 29 of usual construction. Full-stroke devices. A complete operation stroke of the rod 27 is ensured by a lug 41, thereon, that passes downwardly over the toothed face of a flexibly mounted block 42 and returns upwardly over the smooth face thereof.
